Early, because the crowd is the problem

The Taj takes around twenty thousand visitors on a busy day, and almost all of them arrive between nine and one. Being at the gate when it opens means the same building with a fraction of the people, in light that changes minute by minute instead of sitting flat overhead.

Skip-the-line

Pre-booked entry puts you in the shorter lane. Security screens everyone regardless — no tripods, no drones, no food, no large bags — and there are lockers at the gate.

The Taj at sunrise

Grey, then pink, then white as the sun comes over the Yamuna; mist on the river in December and January.

A government-approved guide takes you through it, which matters in Agra where unlicensed guides work every entrance. The calligraphy cut larger as it rises so it reads evenly from the ground; the pietra dura flowers of dozens of inlaid stones; the four minarets, tilted outward so an earthquake would take them clear of the tomb; the optical trick at the gateway; and Shah Jahan's own cenotaph, the single object in the building set off the central axis.

Akbar's red sandstone stronghold of 1565 with Shah Jahan's marble palaces inside, and the Musamman Burj where Aurangzeb held his father prisoner for eight years with the Taj in sight along the water.

The Baby Taj, on the fullest option

Itimad-ud-Daulah across the Yamuna: Nur Jahan's tomb for her father, built 1622–28. The first entirely marble Mughal building and the first in India to use pietra dura, more densely inlaid than the Taj and almost always empty. It is the building the Taj was learned from.
