You cannot go up them, and the reason is worth knowing: people were jumping. The Archaeological Survey shut the internal staircases after a series of suicides, and they have never reopened.

The outward tilt is the other thing about them. Each of the four leans very slightly away from the plinth — by design, so that an earthquake would drop them clear of the tomb rather than through the dome. It is a piece of structural thinking from the 1640s that modern engineers still cite.

At sunrise, with the light coming low across the river, the lean is actually visible if you stand on the axis and look.

The early start

Pickup from your hotel or the airport in Delhi, Noida or Gurugram, then a drive with an empty road.

The gates open half an hour before sunrise. The marble runs grey, then pink, then a cold white as the sun clears the far bank of the Yamuna; in December and January there is mist on the river behind the dome, and the crowd is a fifth of what it becomes by ten.

Agra Fort

Akbar's red sandstone city of 1565 with Shah Jahan's marble palaces inside, and the Musamman Burj where Aurangzeb imprisoned him for eight years, the Taj in view along the river. He died in that tower.
