The sunrise Taj from Delhi means leaving in the dark, and it is worth it every time. The first hour after opening has a fraction of the day's crowd, the air is cool enough to enjoy standing on marble, and the building moves through grey, pink and white as the sun comes up behind it. By ten it is a hot white monument full of people.
How the day runs
Pickup from your hotel or the airport in Delhi, Gurgaon or Noida, which saves an hour if you are staying outside the centre. Private air-conditioned car down the Yamuna Expressway, roughly three hours, timed to reach the gate before it opens.
Skip-the-line entry takes you past the ticket queue and into the first batch. Around two hours inside with your guide, then breakfast and the drive back. About eight and a half hours total, so you are home by early afternoon with the rest of the day intact.
