The useful thing about this listing is that it runs from three different cities. If you are already in Agra it is a half-day; from Delhi or Jaipur it is a long day with four hours of road at each end. Same monuments, same guide, different starting point — pick the option that matches where you are sleeping.
Taj Mahal
Shah Jahan began it in 1632, the year after Mumtaz Mahal died giving birth to their fourteenth child. Twenty thousand workers, twenty-two years, white marble carted 300 km from Makrana in Rajasthan.
A guide is what turns it from a photograph into a building. The calligraphy on the great arch is cut in progressively larger letters so that it reads the same height from the ground. The pietra dura inlay puts as many as sixty separate stones into a single flower. The four minarets lean very slightly outward, so that an earthquake would drop them away from the tomb rather than onto it.
And there is one deliberate break in the symmetry of a building otherwise obsessed with it: Shah Jahan's own cenotaph, placed beside his wife's by Aurangzeb, off the central axis.
Agra Fort
Two kilometres upriver. Akbar built it from 1565 in red sandstone; Shah Jahan replaced much of the interior in marble.
The Diwan-i-Am where petitions were heard, the Khas Mahal and the Sheesh Mahal bath house, and the Musamman Burj — the octagonal tower where Aurangzeb imprisoned his father for eight years, with the Taj visible along the river. Shah Jahan died there and was carried across to be buried beside Mumtaz.
