Fort first, then the Taj — and there is a reason for the order

Most itineraries start at the Taj and finish at the fort. This one reverses it, arriving at Agra Fort mid-morning and the Taj afterwards, which means you approach the great tomb having already stood in the tower its builder died in. It changes the day.

05:00–06:00 — Delhi

Pickup in a private car or van, then the Yamuna Expressway, three to four hours through the fields of western Uttar Pradesh.

09:30 — Agra Fort

A walled city rather than a fort: two and a half kilometres of red sandstone wall and a double moat, begun by Akbar in 1565.

Inside, Jahangiri Mahal, the surviving piece of Akbar's own residential work, with carved brackets and beams rather than arches — Hindu and Central Asian forms used openly. Then Shah Jahan's marble replacements: the Diwan-i-Am, the Khas Mahal, the Sheesh Mahal bath house set with thousands of mirror fragments.

And the Musamman Burj, the octagonal tower on the river wall where Aurangzeb held his father prisoner for the last eight years of his life, within sight of the Taj.

The Taj Mahal

Shah Jahan began it in 1632 for Mumtaz Mahal. Twenty-two years, twenty thousand workers, marble from Makrana 300 km away.

The details worth having pointed out: the calligraphy sized larger as it rises so it reads evenly from below; the pietra dura inlay of dozens of stones per flower; the minarets leaning outward to fall clear of the tomb; and the single asymmetry — Shah Jahan's own cenotaph, added off-axis by Aurangzeb.

Fatehpur Sikri

Akbar's capital of 1571, abandoned after fourteen years when the water failed and therefore preserved whole: the Buland Darwaza, the Panch Mahal, the Diwan-i-Khas, and the marble dargah of Salim Chishti.
