A 5:30 am start, and why it is the right one

Pickup is early because the Taj is best early and the expressway is empty early. Leave Delhi at half past five and you are at the monument before the coach traffic; leave at eight and you spend the first hour of your day in Gurugram.

The drive

Private air-conditioned car down the Yamuna Expressway, three to three and a half hours, with a stop on the way.

Taj Mahal

Shah Jahan began it in 1632 after Mumtaz Mahal died bearing their fourteenth child. Twenty-two years, twenty thousand workers, marble brought 300 km from Makrana.

A licensed guide is what turns this from a photograph into a building: the calligraphy cut in increasing sizes so it reads uniformly from the ground; the pietra dura flowers of dozens of inlaid stones; the minarets leaning outward so an earthquake would take them clear of the tomb; the illusion at the Darwaza-i-Rauza gateway, where the Taj appears to shrink as you approach; and the single deliberate asymmetry — Shah Jahan's own cenotaph, set off-axis beside his wife's.

Agra Fort

Two kilometres upriver. Akbar's red sandstone walls of 1565 with Shah Jahan's marble palaces inside: the Diwan-i-Am, the Khas Mahal, the Sheesh Mahal bath house.

And the Musamman Burj, the marble tower on the river wall where Aurangzeb imprisoned his father for eight years. Shah Jahan died there, looking at the tomb he built for his wife, and was carried across the river to be buried beside her.

Practical

Around ten hours door to door. The Taj is closed on Fridays. Vegetarian, Jain and no-chilli lunches are all routine; say so when you book.
