Mathura and Vrindavan sit roughly halfway between Delhi and Agra, which makes this combination geographically sensible rather than an awkward add-on. What you get is a Mughal imperial monument and a pair of Hindu pilgrimage towns that have been continuously sacred for two thousand years.
The Taj Mahal
With a guide covering the inlay work, the calligraphy and the construction. Early, so the light and the crowd are both on your side.
Mathura
Held to be the birthplace of Krishna, marked by the Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi temple complex. It is a working pilgrimage site rather than a monument and it feels like one — this is not somewhere that performs for visitors.
Vrindavan
Ten kilometres on, where Krishna is said to have spent his childhood. Several thousand temples, from the sixteenth-century Banke Bihari — where the curtain opens and closes every few minutes because the deity's gaze is held to be too powerful to meet continuously — to the marble ISKCON complex. The streets are full of pilgrims, widows in white, and a very large number of monkeys.

The Taj is closed on Fridays. Mathura and Vrindavan temples are open daily.
Watch your glasses and phone in Vrindavan. The monkeys take them deliberately and trade them back for food. This happens every day and it is not a joke.
Temples require modest dress, shoes off, and many do not permit phones or cameras inside.
Temples close for a few hours mid-day for the deity's rest. Your guide plans around it.
Holi in Mathura and Vrindavan is extraordinary and extremely crowded. If you are travelling in March, ask before booking.
