Full description

The foundations are wooden, and they need the river

The Taj sits on a platform carried by masonry wells sunk into the riverbank, packed with rubble and timber. Wet timber lasts indefinitely; timber that dries out rots.

That is why the falling water table of the Yamuna is the thing conservators actually worry about, more than the tourists or the yellowing. The river was part of the engineering, not only the view.

At sunrise, standing on the terrace with the water below and mist coming off it in winter, you can see what the builders were working with.

Pickup

Early, from your hotel or preferred location in Delhi or Agra, in a private air-conditioned car.

The Taj at first light

The gates open half an hour before the sun. The marble reads grey, then pink, then white; the crowd at that hour is a fifth of what it will be by ten.

Shah Jahan began it in 1632, the year after Mumtaz Mahal died. Twenty-two years, twenty thousand workers, marble from Makrana 400 km away.

Your guide covers the calligraphy cut in increasing sizes so it reads evenly from the ground, the pietra dura inlay of dozens of stones per flower, the four minarets tilted outward so an earthquake would drop them clear of the tomb, and the one asymmetry in the whole building.

Agra Fort

Akbar's red sandstone city of 1565 with Shah Jahan's marble palaces inside, and the Musamman Burj — the octagonal tower where Aurangzeb held his father prisoner for the last eight years of his life, the Taj visible down the river. He died in that room.

Four options

An Agra-start car and guide; from Delhi with car, driver and guide; the same with monument entries; or all of it with lunch.

Practical

Twelve hours door to door from Delhi. The Taj is closed on Fridays.

Bring a layer — the riverbank before sunrise in winter is cold.

Amazing experience visiting the Taj Mahal, Our guide was excellent—very knowledgeable, friendly, professional, and easy to communicate with. He explained the history of the Taj Mahal and the Mughal era in an interesting way and answered all of our questions. He also knew the best spots for photos and helped make the whole visit smooth and enjoyable. We never felt rushed, and everything was well organized from start to finish. I would definitely recommend this guide to anyone visiting the Taj Mahal. He made an already incredible place even more memorable. Thank you for a wonderful experience!

Jafar was a fantastic guide in Agra and made visiting the Taj Mahal and other sites truly memorable. He was incredibly knowledgeable and shared interesting details along the way, but also had a light sense of humour that kept things fun and engaging. I also appreciated that he never rushed me, whether explaining the history or patiently taking photos so I could capture the experience.
