Out before dawn, and that is the whole argument.
The Taj at opening and the Taj at eleven are different buildings. At first light the complex holds a few hundred people rather than several thousand, the marble is cool enough to stand on barefoot, and the stone runs grey, then pink, then white as the sun clears the horizon behind the dome.
The cost is the alarm. You leave Delhi in the small hours to make the three-hour run down the Yamuna Expressway and be at the gate before it opens. The car is a comfortable place to sleep on the way back.
How the day runs
Hotel or airport pickup in Delhi. Private air-conditioned vehicle for the full run. You arrive before dawn and go in with the first batch.
Your live guide takes you through the Great Gate approach, the gardens and reflecting pool, the marble platform and the mausoleum interior, at a pace set by the light rather than a schedule. There is time for Agra Fort afterwards depending on the option, and then the drive back. About twelve hours in total.
