They hid it during the war
Twice. In 1942, with Japanese air raids expected, the Archaeological Survey built bamboo scaffolding over the dome so that from the air it would read as a stockpile of bamboo rather than a white marble target. They did it again in the 1965 and 1971 wars with Pakistan, using green cloth over the dome.
There are photographs. It is one of the odder things ever done to a building, and it worked.

The marble reads grey, then pink, then a cold white as the light comes over the far bank of the Yamuna. In December and January there is mist on the river behind the dome, and the crowd at that hour is a fifth of what it becomes by ten.
Shah Jahan began it in 1632, the year after Mumtaz Mahal died. Twenty-two years, twenty thousand workers, marble from Makrana 400 km away.
The calligraphy cut in increasing sizes so it reads evenly from the ground. The pietra dura of dozens of stones per flower. The four minarets tilted outward so an earthquake would drop them clear of the tomb. And Shah Jahan's own cenotaph — the only thing in the building placed off the central axis.
