How the day runs
Hotel pickup anywhere in Delhi. The Yamuna Expressway runs to Agra in about three hours in a private air-conditioned vehicle, and an early start is worth taking — the Taj at seven is cooler, emptier and far better lit than the Taj at eleven.
At the Taj Mahal your live guide walks you through the Great Gate approach, where the dome first appears framed in the archway and the scale registers properly. Then the charbagh gardens and the long reflecting pool, the marble platform, and the mausoleum interior with its cenotaphs and pierced jali screens.
The detail that stays with people: the pietra dura inlay, semi-precious stone cut and set into marble by hand, with jasper from the Punjab, jade from China, turquoise from Tibet and lapis from Afghanistan. And the calligraphy around the great arch, scaled larger as it rises so it reads evenly from the ground.
Agra Fort follows, where the Musamman Burj — the octagonal marble tower Shah Jahan was confined in by his son Aurangzeb — looks across the Yamuna at the tomb he built for his wife. Standing there is what makes the Taj land.
