A 2:30am pickup, and what it is for

This is the earliest version of the Agra day trip and it exists for one reason: to put you at the Taj Mahal as the gates open, half an hour before sunrise, with the marble still grey.

That hour is not a marketing line. The crowd is perhaps a fifth of what it will be by ten, the light moves from grey through pink to white as the sun clears the far bank of the Yamuna, and in December and January there is mist on the river behind the dome.

You will be tired. Everyone who has done both the early and the normal version says this is the one.

03:00–06:00 — the drive

Yamuna Expressway in a private air-conditioned car, with an empty road. Most people sleep.

Sunrise at the Taj

Shah Jahan began it in 1632, the year after Mumtaz Mahal died bearing their fourteenth child. Twenty thousand workers, twenty-two years, marble carted 300 km from Makrana.

Your guide covers the parts that are easy to walk past: the calligraphy cut in increasing sizes so the letters read the same height from the ground; the pietra dura, up to sixty stones in one inlaid flower; the four minarets, leaning fractionally outward so an earthquake would take them clear of the tomb; and the only thing off-centre in the entire building — Shah Jahan's own cenotaph, added beside his wife's by Aurangzeb.

Breakfast

At a five-star hotel afterwards, which at that point in the morning is the best meal of the trip.

Agra Fort

Akbar's red sandstone city of 1565 with Shah Jahan's marble inside, and the Musamman Burj where he died a prisoner of his own son, looking downriver at the tomb he had built.

Guide only; private car, driver and guide; or the version with lunch and all entrance fees.

Practical

Eleven hours from a 2:30am start. The Taj is closed on Fridays. Bring a layer for the riverbank before sunrise in winter.
