The fast way down, and the more comfortable one.
The Gatimaan Express runs Hazrat Nizamuddin to Agra Cantt in about 100 minutes, which is roughly half what the same journey takes on the road, and you spend it in an air-conditioned chair car with breakfast served rather than watching the Yamuna Expressway go by. For a day trip it changes the maths completely: more hours in Agra, fewer in transit, and no chance of losing an hour to traffic getting out of Delhi.
How the day works
You are collected from your hotel, the airport or the railway station anywhere in or around Delhi and taken to Hazrat Nizamuddin for the morning departure. At Agra Cantt a car and your government-approved guide meet the train. From there it is the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, and whatever else the option you picked includes, with the car staying with you all day. Late afternoon you are back at the station for the return train, and a car meets you in Delhi to take you home.

The Taj is closed on Fridays.
The Gatimaan does not run on Fridays either, which lines up neatly.
Train seats are booked in advance and tied to your date, so this one is less flexible than a car tour. Confirm your date before booking.
