The Taj in the morning, rescued elephants in the afternoon.
Wildlife SOS runs the Elephant Conservation and Care Centre at Mathura, about an hour from Agra. The elephants there were pulled out of the tourist-riding trade, from circuses and from street begging, and most arrived with foot damage, blindness or the spinal injuries that come from carrying people for decades. Nobody rides them here. You watch them walk, feed and bathe, and the keepers explain what each animal came from.
It is a genuinely different afternoon from the usual marble-workshop stop, and it is the reason to pick this tour over any other Taj day trip.
How it runs
Pickup from your hotel or the airport in Agra in a private air-conditioned car. Morning at the Taj Mahal with a licensed guide, covering the gate approach, the gardens, the mausoleum and the inlay work. Then the drive out to the sanctuary, time with the animals and the keepers, and back. About eight hours in total.

The Taj is closed on Fridays. The sanctuary is open, so a Friday version of this day still works if you swap the Taj for Agra Fort.
Wildlife SOS asks visitors not to touch or feed the animals outside supervised sessions. It is a rescue centre, not a petting zoo, and the rules exist for the elephants.
