The Taj twice, at both ends of the day

This is the argument for the overnight. Marble from Makrana is translucent to about a centimetre, so light enters the surface and scatters inside it — which means the building takes on the colour of what is hitting it rather than simply reflecting it.

At sunset that reads as gold, then rose, then a grey that holds after the sky has gone. At sunrise it runs the other way: grey to pink to a cold white.

Seeing both is not a repetition. It is two different buildings, and no day trip can give you it.

Day 1: Delhi to Agra, and the sunset

Early departure by car or train. Check in, then the Taj Mahal in the last hours of light, when the crowd is thinning rather than building.

Shah Jahan began it in 1632, the year after Mumtaz Mahal died bearing their fourteenth child. Twenty-two years, twenty thousand workers.

Your guide covers the calligraphy cut in increasing sizes so it reads uniformly from the ground, the pietra dura inlay of up to sixty stones per flower, the four minarets tilted outward so an earthquake would drop them clear of the tomb, and the single asymmetry in the whole composition.

Day 2: sunrise, then Agra Fort

The gates open half an hour before the sun, and at that hour the crowd is a fifth of what it will be by ten. In December and January there is mist on the Yamuna behind the dome.

Then Agra Fort — Akbar's red sandstone city of 1565 with Shah Jahan's marble palaces inside, and the Musamman Burj, the octagonal tower where Aurangzeb imprisoned him for the last eight years of his life with the Taj visible along the river. He died in that room.
