Three days covers these cities. Five lets you stay in them — an evening in the Jaipur bazaars, a second Taj visit at a different hour, an afternoon that is not spent on a highway.

Delhi

Old Delhi — Jama Masjid, India's largest mosque, and a cycle rickshaw through Chandni Chowk, laid out in the 1650s by Shah Jahan's daughter with a canal down the middle that reflected the moon.

New Delhi — India Gate, Humayun's Tomb from the 1560s, the Mughal garden tomb that the Taj descends from, and Qutub Minar, 73 metres of 12th-century brick with the rustless iron pillar at its foot.

Agra

The Taj Mahal, ideally at sunrise, and Agra Fort — Akbar's red sandstone of 1565 with Shah Jahan's marble inside and the Musamman Burj, where he died a prisoner of his own son looking at his wife's tomb.

Fatehpur Sikri on the road west: the capital Akbar built in 1571 and abandoned fourteen years later when the water gave out, which is why it stands complete — the Buland Darwaza, the Panch Mahal, the dargah of Salim Chishti.

Jaipur

Amber Fort above Maota Lake, the City Palace, Jantar Mantar's nineteen stone instruments, and the Hawa Mahal. With five days there is time for Nahargarh at sunset, which is the best view of the city there is.

A driver-only rate if you would rather explore each city yourself. Car, driver and guides. Or either with three-star hotels included.

Practical

Around 700 km of driving in total, all of it on good highways, in a private air-conditioned vehicle.

The Taj is closed on Fridays. Entrance fees are separate unless your option includes them — roughly ₹2,600 a head for the major sites across the three cities.
