Delhi: 1 Day Varanasi Tour with Flight & Sacred Boat Ride

Delhi to the Ganges and back in a day

An early flight north-to-east — about ninety minutes — then a full day on the ground with a car and guide, and the evening flight home. It is the only way to see Varanasi without giving up two travel days.

The boat

The centre of it. A rowed boat along the ghats, where the whole waterfront reads as one continuous stone facade from the water — which is how it was built to be seen. The palaces above the steps were put up by maharajas from across India who each wanted a house on this river.

At dawn the city turns to face the sunrise: thousands of people bathing, washing clothes, praying and practising yoga on the steps at once. In the evening, lamps go out onto the water in leaf boats.

Manikarnika is on this stretch. Its cremation fires have burned without interruption for centuries, because Hindus hold that dying in Varanasi ends the cycle of rebirth.

Photography there is forbidden. That is absolute, and these are funerals.

Ganga Aarti

At Dashashwamedh Ghat: priests on raised platforms with tiered brass lamps, conch shells, bells and incense, moving in exact unison, in front of thousands on the steps and in boats.

Sarnath

Ten kilometres out, where the Buddha gave his first sermon after enlightenment. The Dhamek Stupa marks the spot; the museum holds the Ashokan lion capital, which is the original of the emblem on every Indian banknote and passport.

Kashi Vishwanath

One of the twelve jyotirlinga, at the heart of the old city. Security is heavy — no phones, no bags — and the lanes around it are too narrow for any vehicle.

A Varanasi-start version with the boat and guide, or the all-inclusive day from Delhi with flights.

Practical

Eight and a half hours on the ground. Shoes off at temples, modest dress, and carry very little at aarti — the crowd is dense.
