Delhi: 2-Day Ranthambore Safari by Car with Hotel

One night, and that is what buys you the dawn safari

Ranthambore's morning slot is the better one — cats move at first light and settle by mid-morning — and you cannot reach it on a day trip from Delhi. That is the whole case for the overnight.

Day 1

Morning drive from Delhi, arriving early afternoon at your lodge or resort. Lunch, a short rest, and then the afternoon safari.

Day 2

The dawn safari, which is the one you came for, and then the drive back.

The park

A maharaja's hunting reserve before it became a national park in 1980. 1,300 square kilometres of dry deciduous forest, grassland and rocky ridge, with lakes that concentrate wildlife as the dry season deepens.

Around seventy tigers, and Ranthambore's reputation rests on the fact that they are unusually habituated to vehicles — several of the resident tigresses have been photographed so often they are known by name across India.

Sightings are still luck. Two drives roughly double your odds, which is the arithmetic behind this itinerary.

What you will see regardless

Sambar standing chest-deep in the lakes eating water plants, chital, nilgai, langur dropping fruit for the deer below them, wild boar, and marsh crocodiles at Padam Talao.

The birdlife is excellent: crested serpent eagles, painted storks, kingfishers, and winter migrants on the water.

Ranthambore Fort stands inside the reserve on a 700-foot ridge — tenth century, UNESCO-listed, and still an active temple that pilgrims walk up to on foot through tiger country.

Zones and permits are allocated by the forest department; nobody chooses.

The park closes 1 July to 30 September. October to April is the season; March and April give the best sightings.
