Full description
The Golden Triangle, then the river
Agra and Jaipur are the imperial half of north India. Haridwar and Rishikesh are the devotional half, three hours apart on the Ganges where it leaves the Himalaya, and ending there gives the trip somewhere to land.
Day 1: Delhi, then Agra
Old and New Delhi in a morning — Jama Masjid, a rickshaw ride through Chandni Chowk, a photo stop at India Gate, and Humayun's Tomb, the 1560s garden tomb the Taj descends from.
Then the Yamuna Expressway south, about three and a half hours. Overnight in Agra.
Day 2: Agra
The Taj Mahal at sunrise — grey, then pink, then white, with a fraction of the mid-morning crowd. Agra Fort, and the Musamman Burj where Shah Jahan died a prisoner of his own son with the Taj in view.
Day 3: Jaipur via Fatehpur Sikri
Akbar's capital of 1571, abandoned after fourteen years when the water failed and standing complete because of it.
Day 4: Jaipur
Amber Fort, the City Palace, Jantar Mantar and the Hawa Mahal.
Days 5–6: Haridwar and Rishikesh
Haridwar is one of the four sites of the Kumbh Mela and one of the holiest places in Hinduism. The Ganga Aarti at Har ki Pauri each evening is the thing to see: thousands of lamps set on the water and carried downstream, with the crowd on both banks singing.
Rishikesh, 25 km upstream, is quieter and greener. The suspension footbridges Laxman Jhula and Ram Jhula, the ashram ghats at Parmarth Niketan with their own sunset aarti, and the abandoned ashram where the Beatles stayed in 1968, now covered in murals.
Both towns are strictly vegetarian and alcohol-free within their limits. This is enforced, not aspirational.
