A week, and enough time in it to stop.

The three-day Golden Triangle is a sprint. Seven days covers the same circuit with room to breathe, and adds the two things that never fit into a short itinerary: a tiger reserve, and Varanasi.

The route

Delhi for Qutub Minar, Humayun's Tomb, the Red Fort, Jama Masjid and the Lutyens avenues.

Agra for the Taj Mahal, ideally at sunrise, Agra Fort, and Fatehpur Sikri on the road west.

Jaipur for Amer Fort and the Sheesh Mahal, City Palace, Jantar Mantar and Hawa Mahal, with time for the bazaars rather than a dash between forts.

Ranthambore for the safari — a tenth-century fort with dry forest grown around it, holding a real tiger population along with leopard, sloth bear and a great many birds.

Varanasi to finish, which is unlike anything before it on the route: the ghats at dawn, the Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh in the evening, and a sunrise boat ride along the riverfront.

Worth knowing

Ranthambore closes 1 July to 30 September. Safari slots are government-allocated and sell out in season; the zone is assigned by the forest department and no tiger is guaranteed.
The Taj is closed on Fridays, the Red Fort on Mondays. A seven-day itinerary absorbs both easily.
Varanasi is usually reached by train or a short flight rather than road. Check which your option includes.
October to March is the season across this whole route.
Foreign-national entry across the week runs to roughly ₹6,000 per person.
