Delhi is a different city after dark.

The traffic thins, the temperature drops by ten degrees, and the monuments are lit. For anyone who has spent a day in the Delhi heat, the evening tour is the more pleasant version of the same city.

Akshardham Temple was completed in 2005 and is one of the largest Hindu temple complexes in the world, carved in pink sandstone and white marble with no structural steel anywhere in it. Over 20,000 figures are worked into the stone. At night the whole complex is lit and there is a musical fountain.

India Gate at night is the reason to come: the 42-metre arch floodlit at the end of Rajpath, with the lawns full of Delhi families out for the evening. It is free, open all hours, and it is where the city relaxes.

Safdarjung Tomb, built in 1754 for a Mughal prime minister, is the last of the great garden tombs in Delhi and by far the quietest. Coming here after Akshardham's scale is a deliberate contrast.

Akshardham is closed on Mondays.
No phones, cameras, bags or electronics are permitted inside Akshardham, and this is strictly enforced with airport-style security. Lockers are available and your driver can hold things. Allow extra time for the queue.
Entry to the temple itself is free; the exhibitions and musical fountain are ticketed separately.
Safdarjung Tomb closes at sunset, so it is visited before dark rather than lit.
