The largest Hindu temple complex of its kind, finished in 2005.
Akshardham is not ancient and does not pretend to be. It was completed in 2005 using traditional methods, carved from pink sandstone and white marble with no structural steel anywhere in the building. Around 20,000 figures are worked into the stone: deities, dancers, musicians, elephants. Whatever you make of the scale, the craftsmanship is real and the work was done by hand.
The water and light show
The evening show, Sahaj Anand, runs in a stepwell-shaped court and tells a story from the Upanishads using water jets, projection, fire and a live musical score. It runs about 25 minutes and it is the reason most people come at dusk rather than midday.

The exhibition halls cover Indian history and philosophy, there is a boat ride through 10,000 years of Indian heritage, and the gardens hold bronze figures of historical figures. Your guide will tell you which of these are worth your time and which to skip.
