Jaipur in a day from Delhi, which most people assume is not possible.
It is about 270 km each way on a good expressway, so roughly five hours of driving across the day. That leaves enough for the two buildings that matter most, done properly rather than glimpsed.
Amber Fort
Built from 1592 above Maota Lake in pale sandstone, a fort outside and a palace within. The Sheesh Mahal, the mirror chamber, is what people remember: thousands of convex mirror tiles set into wall and ceiling so a single flame multiplies across the whole room. Your guide will also show you the Ganesh Pol gateway and the Sukh Niwas, cooled by water channels running through it, which is remarkable engineering for the sixteenth century on top of a hill.
City Palace
Still partly lived in by the royal family. The Mubarak Mahal textile collection, the Diwan-i-Khas with two sterling silver urns that remain the largest single pieces of silver ever made, and the Pritam Niwas Chowk with its four painted seasonal doorways.
