Delhi in the evening is a different place from Delhi at two in the afternoon. The temperature drops sharply, the traffic thins, the monuments are lit, and the lawns fill with families. For anyone who has spent a day in the heat, this is the more pleasant version of the same sightseeing.
What you see
Rashtrapati Bhavan, the President's residence, at the head of Rajpath. It has 340 rooms and was Lutyens' centrepiece for the new capital; you see it from the forecourt with the Secretariat buildings flanking the approach.
India Gate, the 42-metre war memorial carrying roughly 13,300 names, floodlit at the end of the avenue. This is where Delhi actually comes in the evening, and the atmosphere has nothing to do with sightseeing.
Safdarjung's Tomb, built in 1754 and the last of the city's great garden tombs, quiet and almost always empty.
Qutub Minar, the 72-metre minaret begun in 1192, lit after dark.
