Delhi: Golden Triangle & Ranthambore Tiger Safari Tour 6-Day

Six days, and two of them in a tiger reserve

Ranthambore sits between Agra and Jaipur, so it costs a night rather than a detour. Six days rather than five means two safaris instead of one, which roughly doubles your odds of a tiger — sightings are a matter of probability and nothing else.

Day 1: Delhi

Jama Masjid, a cycle rickshaw through Chandni Chowk, and a photo stop at the Red Fort. Then India Gate, Rashtrapati Bhavan from the road, and Qutub Minar with its unrusted iron pillar.

Days 2–3: Agra

The Taj Mahal at sunrise, when the gates open half an hour before the sun and the marble runs grey to pink to white. Agra Fort, with the Musamman Burj where Aurangzeb imprisoned his father for eight years with the Taj visible along the river.

Days 4–5: Ranthambore

Safaris run early morning and mid-afternoon in open gypsies or canters, on a zone the forest department allocates. Nobody chooses their zone, including us.

The park covers 1,300 square kilometres of dry deciduous forest and grassland around a tenth-century hill fort that still stands inside the reserve. Something like seventy tigers live here, and they are unusually habituated to vehicles, which is why Ranthambore gives the best odds in north India.

What is certain regardless: sambar, chital, nilgai, langur, crocodiles at the lakes, and the fort above.

Day 6: Jaipur, then Delhi

Amber Fort, the City Palace, Jantar Mantar, the Hawa Mahal, and the drive back.

Car, driver and guide; or with three-star or four-star hotels and the jeep safaris included.

Practical

Ranthambore closes 1 July to 30 September. October to April is the season; March and April give the best sightings as the water dries up. Winter dawns in an open jeep are cold — bring a jacket.

Permits are limited, so book early. The Taj is closed on Fridays.
