Full description

Half a day in Lutyens' Delhi.

This is the short tour of the capital's twentieth-century quarter, the part built when the British moved their capital from Calcutta in 1911 and laid out a new city of wide avenues and sandstone.

Sacred Heart Cathedral was completed in 1934 in Italian Renaissance style, all white and blue with a barrel-vaulted nave. It is a working cathedral, quiet in the middle of the day, and almost no tourists go. That is much of its appeal.

India Gate is the 42-metre arch at the end of Rajpath, built as a war memorial to the 84,000 Indian soldiers who died in the First World War and the Third Anglo-Afghan War. Around 13,300 names are carved into it. The lawns around it are where Delhi comes in the evening, with families, ice cream sellers and an atmosphere that has nothing to do with sightseeing.
