Most of it happens behind unmarked doors in residential neighbourhoods. There is no gallery district with signage, no weekend crowd, and if you do not know where to go you will not find it.

Where you go

Lado Sarai is the closest thing to a gallery district — a couple of dozen spaces in a former village behind the Qutub complex, showing everything from established modernists to first solo shows.

Shahpur Jat and Hauz Khas for smaller, newer spaces, often above a designer's studio.

The larger institutions depending on what is on: Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, which holds one of the most significant private collections of modern Indian art anywhere, and the National Gallery of Modern Art at Jaipur House by India Gate.
