Ninety minutes, and a temple with a specific history

The Lakshminarayan Temple — everyone calls it Birla Mandir — was built by the industrialist Birla family between 1933 and 1939, and it was inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi on one condition: that people of every caste be admitted.

In 1939 that was not a small thing. Temple entry for Dalits was one of the central fights of the period, and Gandhi's condition made this building a statement rather than only a donation.

That is the reason to spend an hour and a half here rather than photographing it from the road.

The temple

Dedicated to Lakshminarayan — Vishnu with his consort Lakshmi. Three storeys of cream and red-ochre sandstone in the Nagara style, with tall curved shikharas and a great deal of carving, built across 6.27 acres.

Side shrines honour Shiva, Durga, Krishna, Hanuman, Ganesh and the Shiv Parivar.

The Sheesh Mahal and Geeta Bhawan are used for discourses rather than worship, and the gardens behind hold fountains and sculpted scenes, including a fairly startling set on Hindu mythology that children like.

The architect was Sris Chandra Chatterjee, working in a consciously revivalist Indian idiom at a moment when most public building in Delhi was being done by the British in another one entirely.

What is expected

Shoes off at the counter, which is free and staffed. Shoulders and knees covered. No photography inside the shrines, and leather items — belts, bags, wallets with leather trim — should be left in the car.

It is an active temple, so there will be aarti happening. You can sit at the back for as long as you like.
