Full description

A planetarium, and a good one

The Nehru Planetarium sits in the grounds of Teen Murti Bhavan, which was Jawaharlal Nehru's official residence and is now a museum to him. The planetarium opened in 1984 and it has been showing the sky to Delhi schoolchildren ever since.

It is an unusual thing to book on an India trip and it works for two kinds of traveller: families with children who have had enough forts, and anyone interested in how India got into space.

The dome show

The main event: a projected journey out through the solar system and into the galaxy, narrated, in a reclining-seat dome. Shows run at set times in English and Hindi, and they last around forty minutes.

It is a genuine optical planetarium rather than a video screen, which means the star field is projected rather than rendered — and on a dome that reads very differently.

The exhibits

The galleries cover astronomy basics and then the part most visitors do not expect: India's own space programme.

Rakesh Sharma flew from this country's programme in 1984 and spoke to Indira Gandhi from orbit — she asked him how India looked from up there, and he said saare jahan se achha, the opening line of a famous Urdu poem. That exchange is part of why this building matters locally.

There are models of Indian launch vehicles, satellite hardware, and displays on Chandrayaan and Mangalyaan — the Mars mission that reached orbit on a budget smaller than most Hollywood films.

Teen Murti Bhavan

The grounds are worth the extra twenty minutes. Nehru's study and bedroom are preserved as they were, which tells you a good deal about the man.

Practical

Around four hours with hotel pickup and drop-off in an air-conditioned car.

Show timings are fixed, so the pickup is set against them. Closed on Mondays and on public holidays.

The dome is cold — the air conditioning is set for equipment, not people. Bring a layer even in June.
