The tuk-tuk is not a novelty here, it is the only thing that fits.

Shah Jahan laid out Old Delhi's lanes in the 1640s and they have not widened since. Cars physically cannot enter most of them. A tuk-tuk can, which is why this tour uses one and why you see parts of the city that a car tour drives around the edge of.

Where you go

Chandni Chowk, the main avenue, once with a canal running down the middle of it reflecting the moon — which is what the name means. Off it run the specialist lanes: Kinari Bazaar for wedding trim and zari, Dariba Kalan for silver, Nai Sarak for books, and the paratha lane that sells nothing else.

Khari Baoli, and this is the one people remember. Asia's largest spice market, trading since the seventeenth century, sacks of chilli and turmeric and dried fruit stacked to the ceiling. Climb to the rooftop above it for the view and be warned: the chilli dust in the air will make you cough. Everybody coughs. It is part of it.

Masala chai along the way, from a pot that has not been washed out since morning.

Most of Chandni Chowk closes on Sundays. Monday to Saturday it is fully open and fully chaotic.
Carry cash. Very few of these shops take cards.
Keep your bag in front of you. It is not dangerous, it is dense.
Comfortable shoes — there is real walking between tuk-tuk stops, on uneven ground.
The spice market is genuinely hard on the throat and eyes for a few minutes. Worth it.
