Two cities, one day, told as a story rather than a list.
Delhi is not one city. Old Delhi is Shah Jahan's Shahjahanabad from 1639 — dense, loud, unchanged in its street plan. New Delhi is Lutyens' capital from 1911 — wide avenues, sandstone, space. Eight hours is enough to see both and feel the difference, which is the thing a half day never delivers.
Old Delhi
The Red Fort, two kilometres of red sandstone wall and the seat of Mughal power until 1857. Jama Masjid, India's largest mosque, where you can climb the southern minaret for the best view over the old city. Chandni Chowk and the specialist lanes running off it — silver at Dariba Kalan, wedding trim at Kinari Bazaar, the spice market at Khari Baoli. Cars cannot enter, so that stretch is on foot or by rickshaw.
New Delhi
India Gate and Rajpath, Rashtrapati Bhavan from the forecourt, Humayun's Tomb — the garden tomb the Taj Mahal was modelled on — and Qutub Minar with the iron pillar that has not rusted in sixteen centuries.

Worth knowing
The Red Fort is closed on Mondays. Jama Masjid closes to visitors at prayer times and requires covered shoulders and knees, shoes off.
