The full circuit, with a woman guiding.
Guiding in north India is overwhelmingly a male trade. For women travelling alone, groups of women, or families with daughters, having a female guide across three days and three cities changes the trip considerably — particularly in Old Delhi's lanes and Jaipur's bazaars.
Day one — Delhi
Qutub Minar, begun in 1192, with the unrusting iron pillar. Humayun's Tomb, the garden tomb the Taj was modelled on. Old Delhi for the Red Fort, Jama Masjid and Chandni Chowk. India Gate and the colonial avenues.
Day two — Agra
The Taj Mahal, ideally at sunrise. Agra Fort. Fatehpur Sikri on the road west to Rajasthan.
Day three — Jaipur
Amer Fort and the Sheesh Mahal, City Palace, Jantar Mantar, Hawa Mahal, and the bazaars — where a guide who knows the fair price is worth more than anywhere else on the route.
