Old Delhi
Shah Jahan founded Shahjahanabad in 1639 and its street plan has not changed. The Red Fort, seat of Mughal power for two hundred years. Jama Masjid, India's largest mosque, with a southern minaret you can climb for the best view over the old city. Chandni Chowk and the lanes off it, each selling one thing: silver at Dariba Kalan, wedding trim at Kinari Bazaar, spices at Khari Baoli. Cars cannot get in, so this stretch is walked or taken by rickshaw.
New Delhi
Lutyens' capital from 1911. India Gate on Rajpath, Rashtrapati Bhavan from the forecourt, Humayun's Tomb — the prototype for the Taj Mahal — and Qutub Minar with the iron pillar that has stood unrusted for sixteen centuries.
