Two cities in one, and they are genuinely different places.

Delhi is not one city. Old Delhi is Shah Jahan's Shahjahanabad, built from 1639, dense and loud and unchanged in its street plan. New Delhi is Lutyens' capital from 1911, wide avenues and sandstone and space. Doing both in a day is the only way to see what the contrast actually feels like.

Old Delhi

The Red Fort, seat of Mughal power for two centuries. Jama Masjid, India's largest mosque, also Shah Jahan's, where you can climb the southern minaret for the best view over the old city. Chandni Chowk and the lanes off it, covered on foot or by cycle rickshaw because cars cannot get in. Raj Ghat, Gandhi's cremation site.

New Delhi

India Gate and Rajpath, Rashtrapati Bhavan from the forecourt, Humayun's Tomb — the garden tomb the Taj Mahal was modelled on — and Qutub Minar, the 72-metre minaret begun in 1192 with the iron pillar that has not rusted in sixteen centuries.

Worth knowing

The Red Fort is closed on Mondays. Jama Masjid closes to visitors during prayer times, and requires covered shoulders and knees with shoes off.

A full day is about seven hours and covers both halves properly. A half day does one of them.
Old Delhi is best in the morning before it gets impassable, and New Delhi in the late afternoon light.
The car cannot enter Chandni Chowk. That stretch is on foot or by rickshaw, which is the right way anyway.
