The city lit, and cool enough to enjoy

Delhi in the evening is a different proposition: the temperature drops, the traffic thins, and the monuments are floodlit. From April to September it is the only comfortable time to be outdoors, and even in winter it is the better half of the day.

India Gate

The 42-metre arch on Rajpath, carved with the names of more than 13,000 soldiers, lit from below with the lawns full of families and ice-cream carts. This is where Delhi actually spends its evenings.

The Amar Jawan Jyoti flame moved to the National War Memorial nearby in 2022, and that memorial is worth the ten minutes.

Rashtrapati Bhavan and Rajpath

The whole Lutyens axis lit — the President's House at the top, the Secretariat blocks either side, and the ceremonial boulevard running down to India Gate.

Humayun's Tomb and Qutub Minar

Both floodlit from the outside. The Qutub complex in particular reads better lit than it does at noon, because the light picks out the depth of the inscription bands on the minaret.

Akshardham

On some options, for the evening water and light show on the stepwell. Read this first: no phones, cameras, bags or electronics are permitted inside, security is airport-grade, and the complex is closed on Mondays.

Bangla Sahib

The Sikh gurudwara with its golden dome, floodlit and reflected in the tank, and open through the night. The free kitchen is running at any hour you visit. Head covered, shoes off, feet washed on the way in.
