Humayun's Tomb was completed in 1572, commissioned by the emperor's widow Bega Begum and designed by the Persian architect Mirak Mirza Ghiyas. It was India's first garden tomb, and the first to set a great white dome on a red sandstone plinth inside a charbagh — the four-part garden divided by water channels.

Eighty years later, Shah Jahan's architects built the Taj Mahal from the same template. Seeing this first changes how the Taj reads: it stops looking like a miracle that arrived from nowhere and starts looking like the end of a line of development. That is the reason to come, and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that gets a small fraction of the Taj's visitors.
