From Delhi: 4-Day Golden Triangle & Ranthambore Tiger Safari

Ranthambore sits almost exactly between Agra and Jaipur, which makes adding it to this route a matter of an extra night rather than a separate trip. It is one of the best places in India to actually see a wild tiger.

Day one: Delhi to Agra

Down the Yamuna Expressway, about three and a half hours. The Taj Mahal with a guide, then Agra Fort — Akbar's red sandstone walls of 1565 and the octagonal tower where Aurangzeb imprisoned his father with the Taj in view. Mehtab Bagh across the river for sunset if the timing works. Overnight in Agra.

Day two: Agra to Ranthambore via Fatehpur Sikri

Fatehpur Sikri first — the Mughal capital Akbar built in 1571 and left fourteen years later when the water ran out, which is why it survives complete: the Buland Darwaza, the Panch Mahal, the marble dargah of Salim Chishti.

Then south to Ranthambore, roughly six hours.

Day three: the park

Safaris run in the early morning and mid-afternoon, in open canter or gypsy vehicles, on a zone allocated by the forest department — you do not choose it.

Ranthambore holds somewhere around seventy tigers across 1,300 square kilometres of dry forest, and the sightings here are unusually good because the animals are habituated to vehicles. It is still wildlife, and nobody can promise you a tiger. What is guaranteed is sambar, spotted deer, crocodiles at the lakes, and the tenth-century fort standing above the whole park.

Day four: Jaipur

Amber Fort, City Palace, Jantar Mantar, Hawa Mahal, then back to Delhi.

Practical

Ranthambore closes from 1 July to 30 September for the monsoon. October to April is the season, and March to April gives the best sightings as the water dries up.

Safari permits are limited and must be booked well ahead. Mornings in December and January are genuinely cold in an open vehicle.
