Full description
Two UNESCO sites, one morning
Red Fort and Humayun's Tomb are eight kilometres and a hundred years apart, and seeing them back to back is the single best short introduction to Mughal Delhi. One is the seat of the empire at its height; the other is the tomb that set the pattern for everything the Mughals built afterwards, including the Taj.
Red Fort
Shah Jahan moved his capital from Agra and built this from 1638 — red sandstone walls two kilometres around, on the bank of a Yamuna that has since shifted away.
Inside: the Chatta Chowk, a covered bazaar that once sold silk and gems to the court and now sells souvenirs; the Diwan-i-Aam, where the emperor heard public petitions from a marble alcove; and the Diwan-i-Khas, which held the Peacock Throne until Nadir Shah carried it to Persia in 1739. The inscription on its wall still reads that if there is a paradise on earth, it is here.
The Prime Minister addresses the nation from its ramparts every 15 August.
Humayun's Tomb
Commissioned in 1565 by Bega Begum for her husband, designed by a Persian architect, and the first building in India to put a tomb in the centre of a four-part garden split by water channels. Red sandstone with white marble inlay, a double dome, and a symmetry so exact that it takes a moment to register.
UNESCO restored the gardens and the water system over ten years; they work again.
Skip the line
Entry is arranged in advance, so you walk past the ticket queue at both sites — which at the Red Fort on a Sunday can be half an hour.

Guide only, if you have your own car. Guide with private car and driver. Or guide, car and both entrance tickets included — ₹600 a head each site for foreign nationals, so that option is close to break-even convenience.
Red Fort is closed on Mondays.
