The seat of Mughal power for two hundred years.

Shah Jahan built the Red Fort from 1639 when he moved the capital from Agra to his new city of Shahjahanabad. It ran the empire until 1857, and it is still where the Prime Minister speaks from on Independence Day. The walls run two kilometres in red sandstone, which is where the name comes from.

What is inside

Through the Lahori Gate and along Chatta Chowk, the covered bazaar where the court once bought silk and jewellery and which still sells things to visitors today. The Diwan-i-Am, the hall of public audience, where the emperor heard petitions from anyone who came. The Diwan-i-Khas beyond it, once home to the Peacock Throne, with the inscription still reading that if there is a paradise on earth, it is here. The marble Rang Mahal and Khas Mahal along the river side, and the Hammam, the royal baths.
