This is the flexible version: at its simplest a guided Red Fort visit with skip-the-line entry and a car to and from your hotel; at its fullest a customisable day across Old and New Delhi built around it.
The fort itself
Shah Jahan began it in 1639 as the palace fort of his new capital, Shahjahanabad. Two kilometres of red sandstone wall, and the seat of Mughal power until 1857. Inside: the Lahori Gate and the covered Chatta Chowk bazaar, the Diwan-i-Am where the emperor heard public petitions, the Diwan-i-Khas that once held the Peacock Throne, and the marble pavilions along the river side.
If you take a fuller option
Old Delhi adds Jama Masjid, India's largest mosque and also Shah Jahan's, and Chandni Chowk, best covered by cycle rickshaw since cars cannot enter the main lanes. New Delhi adds India Gate, Humayun's Tomb and the Lutyens avenues.
