Humayun's Tomb was finished in 1572, commissioned by the emperor's widow Bega Begum and designed by the Persian architect Mirak Mirza Ghiyas. It was the first garden tomb in India and the first to use the charbagh layout, the four-part garden divided by water channels, with a great white dome on a red sandstone plinth.

Eighty years later Shah Jahan's architects built the Taj Mahal on the same template. Stand here first and the Taj stops looking like a miracle from nowhere and starts looking like the culmination of something. That is the reason to come.

It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site that gets a fraction of the Taj's visitors, so you can actually look at it.

What you see

The main tomb and its dome, the charbagh with its channels and pools, and the smaller tombs scattered through the complex that hold well over a hundred Mughal burials. Your guide covers the Persian influence, the red sandstone and white marble contrast that became the Mughal signature, and the restoration work that brought the gardens back.
