Four days: arrival, then a city a day

The shape that works best for most people. You land, you get a half day of Delhi, and then each subsequent day belongs to one city rather than to a highway.

Day 1: Delhi

Private vehicle from the airport or your hotel, check in, and then the capital in the afternoon.

India Gate, Rashtrapati Bhavan and Parliament House along Rajpath — the imperial city Lutyens laid out in the 1920s, and still the seat of government.

Lotus Temple, the Bahá'í house of worship of 1986 with its twenty-seven marble petals, and Akshardham if time allows, which is worth knowing about in advance: no phones, no cameras, no bags, airport-grade security, and closed on Mondays.

Evening at Connaught Place.

Day 2: Delhi to Agra

The Yamuna Expressway, about three and a half hours. The Taj Mahal and Agra Fort with a licensed guide.

At the Taj, the things worth having pointed out: calligraphy cut in increasing sizes so it reads the same height from the ground; pietra dura flowers of dozens of inlaid stones; minarets tilted outward so an earthquake would drop them clear of the tomb; and Shah Jahan's own cenotaph, the single object in the building placed off-centre.

Day 3: Agra to Jaipur

Fatehpur Sikri on the way — Akbar's capital of 1571, abandoned when its water failed and preserved whole. The Buland Darwaza, the Panch Mahal, the marble dargah of Salim Chishti.

Jaipur by afternoon, with the evening free.

Day 4: Jaipur, then Delhi

Amber Fort early, then the City Palace, Jantar Mantar and Hawa Mahal, before the drive back.
