The home stay option is the one worth pausing on. Instead of a hotel, you stay with a family — which on a three-day circuit changes the trip considerably, because the evenings stop being hotel evenings.
Day one — Delhi
Qutub Minar, begun in 1192, with the iron pillar that has stood in the open for sixteen centuries without rusting. Humayun's Tomb, the first Mughal garden tomb and the direct model for the Taj. Old Delhi for the Red Fort, Jama Masjid and Chandni Chowk. India Gate and the colonial avenues.
Day two — Agra
The Taj Mahal, at sunrise if you take the advice. Agra Fort, and the Musamman Burj where Shah Jahan spent his last years looking at his wife's tomb across the river. Fatehpur Sikri on the road west.
Day three — Jaipur
Amer Fort and the Sheesh Mahal, City Palace, Jantar Mantar, Hawa Mahal, and the bazaars. Back to Delhi.
