Krishna's country, and back by night

Mathura is 180 km south of Delhi, Vrindavan another 11 km on, and together they are among the most visited pilgrimage towns in India. A 6 am pickup gets you there by nine and home by evening.

Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi

Hindus hold that Krishna was born here, in a prison cell where his parents were held by King Kansa. The cell is beneath the present temple complex.

Security is the strictest you will meet in India — no phones, no cameras, no bags, no belts in some queues. Leave everything in the car; there is no cloakroom worth trusting and arguing at the gate achieves nothing.

Dwarkadhish Temple

Mathura's principal working temple, built in 1814, with painted ceilings and swinging deities during festival season. Busy, loud, and the best place to see local practice rather than pilgrim traffic.

Vishram Ghat

The steps down to the Yamuna where Krishna is said to have rested after killing Kansa. Turtles in the water, lamps at dusk, and the aarti performed here every evening.

Vrindavan

Where Krishna is said to have grown up, and a town of several thousand temples.

Banke Bihari is the one that matters most to devotees — 1860s, packed, and with a curtain drawn across the deity every few minutes so that nobody holds his gaze too long. During Janmashtami the crush is serious; at other times it is simply lively.

ISKCON's Krishna Balaram temple and the marble Prem Mandir, lit in colour after dark, are usually included depending on time.

Practical

Both towns are strictly vegetarian and dry. Shoes come off at every temple and the stone is hot from April onward — carry socks. Monkeys in Vrindavan take spectacles and phones, genuinely and often.
