Varanasi and back between two nights
Delhi to Varanasi is 800 km. By road that is a day each way; by air it is ninety minutes, which is the only way this works as a single day. Early flight out, evening flight back, and a full day on the ground with a car and a guide.
It is a long day and it covers a great deal. If you can spare a night, stay — but this exists because most people on a two-week India trip cannot.
Sarnath
First stop, ten kilometres from the airport side of the city. This is where the Buddha gave his first sermon after enlightenment, setting out the Four Noble Truths to five companions in a deer park.
The Dhamek Stupa marks the spot — a 43-metre cylinder of brick and stone, the current structure from around 500 CE. The Chaukhandi Stupa marks where he met those companions. And the Ashoka Pillar, whose four-lion capital is in the museum here: that carving is the original of the State Emblem of India, the one on every Indian banknote and passport.
The museum is small, excellent, and has no photography.
Kashi Vishwanath
The Shiva temple at the heart of the old city, one of the twelve jyotirlinga, and among the most visited religious sites in India. Security is strict, queues are long, and phones and bags are not permitted — leave them in the car.
The lanes around it are too narrow for any vehicle and are the oldest inhabited part of the city.
The boat
On the Ganges in the late afternoon, along the ghats. The whole waterfront reads as one continuous stone facade from the water, which is how it was built to be seen.
Manikarnika's cremation fires have burned without interruption for centuries. Photography there is forbidden, absolutely, and your guide will tell you where the line is.
Ganga Aarti
At Dashashwamedh Ghat after dark: tiered brass lamps, bells, conch shells and incense, performed by priests moving in exact unison before thousands on the steps.
Then the airport, and Delhi by night.
