Khari Baoli to Dariba Kalan, with someone who buys here
Two of the oldest specialised markets in Asia sit four hundred metres apart in Old Delhi, and this walk goes through both with a local woman guide — which changes the experience of those lanes considerably.
Khari Baoli
The largest spice market in Asia, trading since the 1600s from a street barely wide enough for a handcart.
Sacks of turmeric, coriander, cardamom, dried chilli, black pepper and asafoetida stacked three metres high, with the wholesale rates chalked on boards. Every shop in north India buys here, which means the prices you see are the real ones.
The dried chilli sections will make you cough. Everyone coughs; the traders find it funny.
The old havelis above the shops are worth looking up at — merchant houses from the 1800s, most still owned by the families that trade below them, and a few you can climb to for a rooftop view over the whole market.
Dariba Kalan
The silver lane, and the name means the street of the incomparable pearl. Silver has been sold here for three hundred years, by weight, on scales in front of you.
Ask for the hallmark. A reputable shop will quote a per-gram rate plus making charges and show you the scale, and that is how you know you are in a real one.
Kinari Bazaar next door for wedding trim — zari, gota, tassels and sequins in quantities that have to be seen during the winter wedding season.
What your guide is for
Telling real saffron from safflower, which is the single most common substitution in that market. Knowing which spice shops grind fresh and which sell last year's stock. Handling the negotiation in Dariba, or teaching you to.
And getting you back out — these lanes are unmapped and Google is useless in them.
