Full description

Mughal India, then Sikh India

The triangle is forts and tombs. Amritsar is a living faith and a modern wound, and it makes for a very different last two days.

Days 1–2: Delhi

Old Delhi — the Red Fort, Jama Masjid, and a rickshaw through Chandni Chowk. New Delhi — India Gate, Rashtrapati Bhavan, Qutub Minar and the Lotus Temple. Evenings free at Connaught Place or Dilli Haat.

Day 3: Agra

Agra Fort on arrival, then the Taj Mahal at sunset, which is the better light for photography and the thinner crowd.

Day 4: Jaipur via Fatehpur Sikri

An optional Taj sunrise before leaving, then Fatehpur Sikri — Akbar's complete capital of 1571, abandoned after fourteen years.

Day 5: Jaipur

Amber Fort, the City Palace, Jantar Mantar, Hawa Mahal, and the bazaars.

Days 6–7: Amritsar

The Golden Temple — Harmandir Sahib — is the centre of the Sikh faith: a gilded shrine on a causeway in the middle of a tank, open on all four sides to signify that anyone may enter from any direction. It is open day and night, and it is at its most extraordinary before dawn when the Guru Granth Sahib is carried in.

Its langar feeds somewhere between fifty and a hundred thousand people a day, free, every day, and volunteers do all of it. You can join them.

Jallianwala Bagh is next door — the walled garden where British troops fired on a trapped, unarmed crowd in 1919, killing hundreds. The bullet marks are still in the wall and the well people jumped into is still there. It takes twenty minutes and it is the most sobering place in Punjab.

Wagah border, 28 km out, holds a flag-lowering ceremony every evening: Indian and Pakistani guards high-kicking at each other in competitive theatre, with grandstands full on both sides. It is absurd and completely absorbing.

What to know

At the Golden Temple: head covered, shoes off, feet washed at the entrance, no smoking, no alcohol. Scarves are free at the gate. Everyone sits on the same floor in the langar.
