The triangle with a national park in the middle of it
Ranthambore sits almost on the line between Agra and Jaipur, which is what makes this work: an extra night rather than a detour, and one of the best chances in India of seeing a wild tiger.
Day 1: Delhi, then Agra
Met on arrival. A half day of the capital — India Gate, the drive past Rashtrapati Bhavan, the Lotus Temple, then Old Delhi with Jama Masjid and a rickshaw through Chandni Chowk.
Then the Yamuna Expressway to Agra, about three and a half hours. Overnight there.
Day 2: Agra to Ranthambore
The Taj Mahal at sunrise, when the gates open half an hour before the sun and the marble runs grey to pink to white. Agra Fort afterwards, and the tower where Shah Jahan died a prisoner of his own son with the Taj in view.

Day 3: Ranthambore
Safaris run early morning and mid-afternoon in open canters or gypsies, on a zone the forest department allocates. Nobody chooses their zone.
The park covers 1,300 square kilometres of dry forest around a tenth-century hill fort, with something like seventy tigers. Sightings are unusually good here because the animals are habituated to vehicles — but it is wildlife, and no one can promise you anything. Sambar, chital, crocodiles at the lakes and the fort above are guaranteed.
Days 4–5: Jaipur, then Delhi
Amber Fort, the City Palace, Jantar Mantar, the Hawa Mahal, and the drive back.
Three options
Car, driver and guide; or with three-star or four-star hotels and the safari included.
Practical
Ranthambore closes 1 July to 30 September. October to April is the season, and March to April gives the best sightings as the water dries up. Winter mornings in an open vehicle are cold.
The Taj is closed on Fridays. Safari permits are limited — book early.
