Our guide was a walking encyclopaedia of Delhi. He linked the Sultanate rulers to the Mughals to the British Raj so clearly that the monuments finally made sense as one story. We spent the full eight hours across New and Old Delhi and never felt rushed. Booking a licensed guide for thirty dollars is honestly the best value we found in India.

We added the car option and it was the right call. Being driven between India Gate, Humayun's Tomb and the Qutub Minar meant we saved our energy for the walking around Chandni Chowk. Our guide navigated the old lanes like it was his own neighbourhood and kept the pushy vendors at bay. A genuinely private, flexible day.

Travelling with my parents I worried about the walking, but the guide paced everything beautifully and skipped the steps that would have been too much. He tailored the day to Mughal history because that's what my father loves. The Red Fort and Jama Masjid came alive with his storytelling. Warm, patient and clearly very knowledgeable.

Fantastic guide and great flexibility, we shaped the whole day around what we wanted to see. My only honest note is the October afternoon was still surprisingly hot and Chandni Chowk gets intensely crowded, so bring water and patience. Entry tickets also aren't included, which is fine but worth budgeting for. Still, brilliant value and I learned a huge amount.

Eight hours flew by. What I appreciated most was that it's truly private, so when I wanted to linger for photos at Humayun's Tomb the guide simply let me. He knew every good angle and even the quiet corners away from the crowds. For anyone nervous about Old Delhi's chaos, having a licensed local by your side makes it feel completely manageable.

January was the perfect time, dry and comfortable for a long day on foot. Our guide met us near India Gate right on time and effortlessly wove together the seven cities of Delhi. He helped us buy monument tickets quickly and steered us to a proper spot for lunch in the old town. Couldn't recommend a government-approved guide more highly.

Very informative day and a lovely, professional guide. The one thing to know is that with the guide-only option you're using autos and the metro, which is fun but a bit tiring in the heat, so I'd pay extra for the car next time. That aside, the depth of history from the Raj-era buildings to the Mughal forts was genuinely impressive.

We only had one day in Delhi and this made it count. The guide asked what interested us over a quick chat and then built the route on the spot, blending colonial New Delhi with the bazaars of the old city. He was fantastic with our two teenagers, full of tales of emperors and battles. Superb value and a real highlight of our India trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

The $30 price covers a full 8-hour day with a Government-approved, English-speaking local guide who walks you through both Old and New Delhi. If you add the car option, a private vehicle for the city tour is included too, so you're not hopping in and out of autos or the metro. The guide's expertise on Delhi's Seven Cities, from the Sultanate period to the Mughals and the British Raj, is really the heart of what you're paying for.
No, entry tickets to monuments are not included in the $30 rate, and neither are meals. You'll pay entrance fees directly at each site you choose to enter (foreign-tourist rates apply at places like the Red Fort, Humayun's Tomb and Qutub Minar). Your guide will tell you the current fee at each stop and help you buy tickets quickly so you skip the confusion at the counter.
Transport depends on the option you choose. The guide alone is included in the base rate, and a car for the city tour is added only if you book that option. If you'd rather have everything bundled with a premium vehicle, look at Explore Old / New Delhi City, By Luxury Car & Official Tour Guide instead. Otherwise, your guide can happily navigate the metro and autos with you.
With the car option, pickup and drop-off are typically arranged from your Delhi hotel so the 8 hours flow smoothly from door to door. If you take the guide-only option, you'll agree a convenient central meeting point, often near India Gate or Connaught Place, when you confirm your booking. Just share your hotel name and area after booking and the team will finalise the exact logistics with you.
There's no rigid checklist, which is the beauty of a private guide, but a full day usually blends New Delhi's colonial landmarks (India Gate, Rashtrapati Bhavan, Humayun's Tomb, Qutub Minar) with Old Delhi's Mughal heart (Red Fort, Jama Masjid and the lanes of Chandni Chowk). Tell your guide what interests you most, whether that's Mughal architecture or Raj-era history, and they'll shape the day around it.
Absolutely, and that's why people choose a guide over a fixed coach tour. Since the day centres on Delhi's Seven Cities across the Sultanate, Mughal and British Raj periods, you can ask to lean into any one of them, spend longer at Old Delhi's bazaars, or slow down for photography. If you'd prefer a set structured route, the Delhi Full Day Guided Tour is a good alternative.
This is a private experience with your own dedicated Government-approved guide, not a shared group bus. The whole day is yours, so the pace, stops and conversation are tailored to you and your party. That makes it ideal for families, couples or solo travellers who want flexibility rather than being herded around on someone else's schedule.
Expect a fair amount of walking, especially through Chandni Chowk's crowded lanes and around large complexes like the Red Fort and Qutub Minar, some with steps and uneven stone underfoot. With the car option the walking is broken up by comfortable drives between sites, which suits older travellers well. Tell your guide about any mobility concerns and they'll pace the day gently and skip anything too strenuous.
Yes, a private guide is great with children because the pace bends to your family rather than the other way around. The stories of emperors, forts and battles bring the monuments alive in a way kids enjoy, and you can build in breaks for snacks or rest. With the car option, little ones can nap between stops and you avoid dragging them through the metro in the heat.
October to March is by far the most comfortable window, with pleasant, dry days ideal for a full 8 hours outdoors. Summers (April-June) are very hot, often above 40°C, and the monsoon (July-September) brings humidity and showers. Starting in the morning helps you cover Old Delhi before the midday heat and beat the worst of the Chandni Chowk crowds.
Wear comfortable closed walking shoes, light breathable clothing, and carry a hat, sunglasses and plenty of water, especially in the warmer months. For Jama Masjid and other religious sites you'll need shoulders and knees covered, and you'll remove shoes before entering, so slip-ons are handy. A small amount of cash for entry tickets, snacks and any shopping is also worth having.
Yes, photography is welcome at most sites, and your guide knows the best angles for India Gate, Humayun's Tomb and the Qutub Minar. A few interiors or museums may charge a small camera fee or restrict shots, and your guide will flag those on the spot. The old lanes of Chandni Chowk are wonderfully photogenic, so keep your phone charged and ready.
Definitely, your guide can steer you to Chandni Chowk's spice market and textile shops and point out trustworthy stalls, though meals and purchases are at your own cost. If shopping is your main interest, consider the dedicated Delhi: Guided Shopping Tour Experience with Female Expert, or for Old Delhi's flavours the Old Delhi Heritage Tour with Street Food is a delicious add-on.
Yes. Having a Government-approved local guide is one of the safest ways to see Old Delhi, as they know the lanes, keep you clear of touts and aggressive vendors, and help you navigate the crowds around Jama Masjid and Chandni Chowk with confidence. Keep valuables secure as you would in any busy city, and follow your guide's advice on where to walk and what to skip.
Once you book, you'll receive a confirmation and the team will contact you to arrange your meeting point or hotel pickup and lock in whether you've taken the guide-only or car-included option. We recommend confirming your preferred start time and any special interests in advance so your guide can plan the route. For exact cancellation terms and any free-cancellation window, check the booking page or reach out to our team before you pay.
This tour is a deep dive into Delhi itself over a single 8-hour day, ideal if the capital is your focus. If you also want to see the Taj Mahal, a Private Delhi to Agra Same Day Trip By Car works well as a separate day, while the Golden Triangle 3 Days Tour adds Agra and Jaipur for a fuller India itinerary.
Yes, Delhi is generally safe for tourists, especially in popular tourist areas like Connaught Place, Chandni Chowk, and around major monuments. Booking a licensed local guide through AsiaByLocals adds an extra layer of safety and local knowledge.
The Delhi Metro is the fastest and most affordable way to travel between attractions. For tour experiences, our guides arrange private air-conditioned vehicles so you can cover Old Delhi and New Delhi comfortably in one day.
For popular sites like Qutub Minar, Humayun's Tomb, and Red Fort, advance tickets are recommended to skip long queues. When you book a guided tour through AsiaByLocals, entry tickets and skip-the-line access are typically included.
