Agra and Jaipur in two days, done comfortably

This covers both cities in 48 hours, which is fast but not frantic, and it runs in an SUV rather than a sedan — which matters on the second day, when the schedule involves a great deal of road.

Day one: Delhi to Agra to Jaipur

Pickup in Delhi and down the Yamuna Expressway, about three hours.

The Taj Mahal with VIP express entry and a licensed guide. Shah Jahan began it in 1632 for Mumtaz Mahal; twenty thousand workers and twenty-two years. Your guide will show you what is easy to miss — the calligraphy cut in increasing sizes so that it reads evenly from the ground, the pietra dura inlay of dozens of stones per flower, the minarets leaning outward so an earthquake would take them away from the tomb.

Then Agra Fort — the only fort where all the early Mughal emperors lived, and where the last of them was imprisoned by his own son with the Taj in view down the river.

Afternoon drive to Jaipur, around four hours, arriving for the night at your hotel.

Day two: Jaipur

Amber Fort first thing, before the crowds thicken: the Ganesh Pol gateway, the Sheesh Mahal, and the courtyards stepping up the ridge above Maota Lake.

Jal Mahal from the causeway — four of its five storeys are underwater and there is no way in.

City Palace, still partly the royal residence, and Jantar Mantar next door, where the 27-metre stone sundial still reads to within a couple of seconds.

Then the drive back to Delhi, roughly five hours.
